Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance

Essays by Be Oakley, Alexis Ruiseco-Lombera, Kimi Hanuer, Noah LeBien, and Lora Mathis

"So happy with how the 5th edition of “Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of a Resistance” publication. This new edition features an extended essay by Be Oakley featuring translations of “Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance”. The book features five written works from Be Oakley, Lora Mathis, Alexis Ruiseco-Lombera, Noah LeBien and Kimi Hanauer on how the statement "Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance" resonates with their practice. Oakley states “In this, “Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance” is not a utopian idea but rather one that tries to grapple with the unique realities we face. It signals and celebrates how we each come to resistance by allowing us to define these terms for ourselves.“ As with every GenderFail project I do everything in the production of the book, acting as editor, printer, binder and distributor. A publishing practice is such an intimate process and I am so proud of this publication created with such little resources. Oakley continues saying “Similarly, the content of my publishing practice engages with another type of resistance in how it is physically disseminated. Radical and minority writers, activists and artists perform resistance through disseminated texts/published materials that represent their identities in public. They insert themselves into publics through the political act of authorship, often because they cannot actually be “public” in the way that able-bodied, white cisgendered people can. The publishing (of publications like the one you’re holding, reading online or have photocopied) slows down the flow of information and allows for the reader to rest, digest and define ideas in their own terms.” Special thanks to TXTbooks for letting us use your studio to print this.

GenderFail is a publishing and programming initiative that seeks to encourage projects that foster an intersectional queer subjectivity. For GenderFail, a queer subjectivity is one that pushes against a capitalist, racist, ableist, xenophobic, transphobic, homophobic, misogynistic, and anti-environmental ideology. Our projects look at various forms of failure - from personal, public, and political perspectives - as a boundless form of creative potential. GenderFail is fueled by the messiness of collaboration, education, and community to continue to push our goals of failing forward. GenderFail embraces failure as a site of cultural production. Since its inception in 2015, GenderFail has released content by Liz Barr, Jesse Harrod, Maria Tínaut, Anthony Iacono, Paige Hanserd, Ethan Kastner with upcoming works by Pallavi Sen, Roxana Azar and Jordan Loeppky-Kolesnik. GenderFail has presented work at MoMA PS1 (NYC), Ulises Books (Philadelphia), After School Special (Milwaukee) and SEDIMENT (Richmond).

GenderFail’s extensive library of art books, artist books and zines is available to the public upon request or at scheduled times, and we have been offering free use of Risograph machine printing to queer, trans, and non-binary identifying folks since Fall 2017. It is GenderFail’s mission to use these programs to share whatever resources we can with the communities we inhabit.
